EARTHQUAKE – A 6.5 magnitude quake jolted Santa Cruz Islands in the Pacific Ocean.

Among the natural incidents that can happen anytime are earthquakes. It is caused by the movements of the plates and can hardly be predicted. It can happen on land and as well as underwater.

Quakes’ effects may vary depending on its magnitude, epicenter, and depth. The shaking may be hardly felt at all or it can lead to damages of properties or the loss of lives.

The countries that are lying along the Pacific Ring of Fire like the Philippines are prone to quakes. Everyday, PH records more than five (5) quakes.

If it happens underwater or on the islands, quakes may trigger tsunami. This is another natural incident that can bring an area into great devastation and massive loss of lives in just a few minutes.

Recently, a 6.5 magnitude earthquake jolted Santa Cruz Islands in the Pacific Ocean. Based on a report on GMA News, the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre recorded the epicenter of the quake at a depth of 129 kilometers or 80 miles.

According to the United States National Tsunami Warning Center, a tsunami is not expected of the said quake in Santa Cruz Islands. Based on the report, the Philippines Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) also said that there is no threat of tsunami.
