A National Artist has stated this against ABS-CBN
National Artist for Literature F Sionil Jose stated in his recent Facebook post that “Filipinos do not really need ABS-CBN” and this garnered various reactions from netizens.
More and more prominent personalities are speaking their thoughts, feelings, and perspectives regarding the issue of ABS-CBN’s franchise. Another prominent person in the world of written arts expressed his views.
F Sionil Jose said that the “Lopez family is a leading member of the oligarchy—far more powerful than any of the oligarchs, then and now.” He said that wealthy clan has a huge influence when it comes to politics and the economy. He even accused the Lopezes of using politics to “influence to enlarge its economic clout.”
In his post, Jose also said that he sympathizes with the hundreds who lose their jobs but he is not sad about the situation that ABS-CBN is in now. “I’ll not mourn the passing of ABS-CBN; its demise, I dare say, is even good for Philippine democracy if it also means the dismantling of the Lopez empire,” he said.
The National Artist also said that “the lowest form of capitalism” is personified in the self of Eugenio Lopez. “The Filipinos do not really need ABS-CBN. It does not produce goods or food. It has certainly entertained millions but it did not diminish poverty. Again, freedom worked for the rich—but not for the Filipinos,” he stressed out.
