Davao City Hospital Readies Plasma Treatment For COVID-19 Patients

PLASMA THERAPY – A state-run hospital in Davao City readies plasma therapies for patients infected with COVID-19.

Currently, there is still no cure for the new coroavirus. According to some experts, it could still be 18 months to 2 years before a vaccine can be developed and mass produced.

However, there are some institutions that say the vaccine they are working on could be available as early as September. Meanwhile, plasma from recovered patients is being used to treat patients with severe COVID-19 symptoms.

As such, the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) got a machine that could transfuse plasma from recovered COVID-19 patients in hopes of treating their current coronavirus patients.

Within the plasma, antibodies for COVID-19 could be found. This then could be used to speed up a current infected patient’s recovery from the virus.

According to a report from ABS-CBN, the hospital is now waiting for the arrival of the plasma from a private supplier in Manila.

“Pag magdating ‘yon, I’m sure puwede kaming makakuha ng mga pasyenteng nagka-COVID na puwedeng mag-donate ng kanilang plasma”.

SPMC Director Dr. Leopoldo Vega

Based on findings from the World Health Organization, convalescent plasma was proven to be effective and life saving against other diseases.

Currently, Davao has reported 154 COVID-19 cases including 84 survivors of the deadly virus. Meanwhile, the southern region reports an average of 3 fresh COVID-19 cases daily.

However, despite the low numbers, Vega stated that the virus still lingers in Davao. As such, he urged everyone to not let their guards down as the virus had yet to be eradicated.
