Tanzania President Ordered Probe Over Test Kits After Goat, Papaya Positive with COVID-19
TANZANIA – The president ordered a probe of the imported test kits after a goat and papaya was tested positive with coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
Recently, there are reports that animals such as cats and dogs have been infected with coronavirus disease (COVID-19). But in Tanzania, a goat and even papaya were tested positive with the virus.
According to the report of Al Jazeera, Tanzanian President John Magufuli suspected that they had obtained false test kits as the results of tests on goats, sheep and papaya were positive. At a meeting in Chato, Magufuli said the COVID-19 testing kits were imported but he did not provide other details such as where the country came from.
He ordered the country’s security forces to check the quality of the test kits. They take a “sample” of the tests but not on humans, instead, they get samples from goat, sheep, and pawpaw or papaya, and put the name of person and age. The samples were sent to the laboratory for examination and the lab technicians were unaware of the source.
When the result came out, the papaya and the goat were positive for the virus. As a result, Magufuli suspected that some of his residents may have been tested positive but in reality, they are negative. He added that test kits cannot be trusted.
“There is something happening. I said before we should not accept that every aid is meant to be good for this nation,” said Magufuli, who criticized the government for being secretive about the COVID-19 outbreak information in his country.
Magufuli said there needs to be an investigation on test kits. As of Sunday, there have been 480 COVID-19 cases in Tanzania, and 17 of them have died.
In the meantime, Magufuli said he would send an emissary to Madagascar to obtain medicine there for the president of the country. However, the so-called herbal mix medicine has not yet been to a global examination.
“I’m communicating with Madagascar,” Magufuli said. “They have got a medicine. We will send a flight there and the medicine will be brought in the country so that Tanzanians too can benefit.”
