DILG warns barangay officials who mishandle the SAP
Barangay officials who are involved in the corruption of the distribution of the cash assistance from the social amelioration program (SAP) will face charges, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) said.
During the enhanced community quarantine, poor families were given cash aid. However, many Filipinos cried foul as the distribution allegedly was not done in a proper way. In line with this, DILG Undersecretary Martin Diño, in the report from The Philippine Star, said that they receive various complaints against officials from the barangay.
Reportedly, there were those officials who asked for processing fee from the SAP beneficiaries. Furthermore, there were also complaints stating that the amount was divided as was given to more families.
With this, the DILG warned the officials who are involved in this corruption, based on the report. “Warning to the (barangay) captain. Those are public funds and there is accountability. Not only will you be removed from your position, you will be imprisoned. The punishment will be severe,” Diño said.
Meanwhile, a post from One Cavite Facebook Page stated that those erring officials might be obliged to pay the P1 million fine.
These post received various reactions from netizens but many of them said that posing a warning is not enough. This should be implemented in order to penalize the corrupt officials.
The DILG has given the local government units to finish the distribution of the SAP until May 7.
