Previously, William Gonzales is the first COVID-19 patient in General Santos City. But according to him, he was infected in Davao City during a two-day 6-cock derby at New Davao Matina Gallera in March.

Davao City was considered as COVID-19 ground zero, because 26 out of COVID-19 cases in Davao Region have exposure to the cockpit in Matina, which is also linked to some of the COVID-19 cases in North Cotabato, Maguindanao, Lanao del Norte, Bukidnon, Butuan and General Santos City, based on DOH region XI data.

Gonzales said he was allured in a huge prize at the derby fight with a total of P26 million in total. Gonzales has yet to determine who got the virus because of so many people in the cockpit.

“Pero bago pumasok ‘yung mga tao doon, tine-test naman. Wala akong napansin, pero siyempre minsan ‘yung sigaw-sigaw ba, yung mga laway siguro,” he told ABS-CBN News.

Three days after attending cockfight, March 15, he was already experiencing symptoms of COVID-19. Gonzales was immediately isolated and worried for his family.

He clung to the Lord, but he felt that he was discouraged that he might survived and lost his family. The slanderous and negative comments of people and netizens on social media added to his sadness.

But after more than 20 days in the isolation facility, he recovered and thanked the government for answering the hospital bill of more than P700,000. He was grateful to God and to the frontliners for his recovery from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
