Potential Cure For COVID-19? Experts Said This About Anti-Malaria Drug

What did experts say about the potential cure for the COVID-19?

The whole world has been pitching an anti-malaria drug as the potential cure for the new coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

A doctor previously mentioned 4 drugs that could help in treating the coronavirus. According to Rafael Castillo, MD, hydroxychloroquine with azithromycin, tocilizumab, and high-dose melatonin have been used to treat patients.

However, based on the report from Manila Times, the anti-malaria drug hydroxychloroquine has not been beneficial but it could be detrimental instead. Reportedly, more deaths are being associated with the said drug rather than recovery.

The government of the United States of America has funded studies to check the efficacy of hydroxychloroquine for COVID-19 treatment. The result was published on a medical preprint site but it was not peer-reviewed yet.

Based on the report, the result of the experiment showed several vital limitations but it simply added to the growing doubts against the drug.

In the experiment, researchers looked at the medical records of 368 veterans hospitalized nationwide. They were those who either died or were discharged by April 11.

28 percent is the recorded death rate among those patients who was treated with hydroxychloroquine while there is only 22 percent death rate among those who had anti-biotic azithromycin, Reportedly, French scientist Didier Raoult supported this drug instead of the anti-malaria drug.

Meanwhile, there is 11 percent death rate among those who had standard care. Researchers also stated that mortality continue to persist even after they statistically adjusted for higher rates of use of the hydroxychloroquine.

Another thing is that the research was done in a retrospective manner. That means, researchers look at the previous incidents that happened instead of assigning people in random groups. It is also hard to generalize since the subjects of the experiment were mostly were male, with a median age over 65 and black, based on the report.
