World Champion Boxer Tries Aquaponics Farming Amid COVID-19 Crisis

WORLD CHAMPION BOXER – One of boxing’s longest-reigning champion, Jerwin Ancajas, turned into an aquaponics farmer amid COVID-19 quarantine.

Philippine President Rodrigo Roa Duterte placed Luzon under “enhanced community quarantine” to control the spread of the 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19). On Tuesday, April 7 he extended the ECQ until April 30, 2020.

The Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary William Dar said the National Capital Region has enough food supply. After he assured the people about it, he encouraged them to grow vegetables in their homes. “We need to promote proper implementation of urban agriculture in the metropolis so that when there is tightening of food supply from the provinces, there will be enough in urban areas as well,” he said.

The extended quarantine gave the World Junior Bantamweight champion Jerwin Ancajas an opportunity to learn new things. Based on a report from ABS-CBN News, the professional boxer learned how to build an aquaponics system at his Surval Camp in Cavite.

It is an alternative form of farming that combines raising fish and plants. Ancajas has been experimenting with it for 2 years now.

According to the report, the coach of the world champion boxer, Joven Jimenez said the enhanced community quarantine has allowed them to spend more time on aquaponics. He said they learned it by watching Youtube.

“Sa YouTube kami natuto… kapag walang training, doon kami sa farming nagpupunta…”

“Noong una, wala kasi kaming alam sa farming kaya madami ring palpak. Pero ngayon nagamit namin nang husto,” he added.

Based on the report, Jerwin Ancajas and his team were working on a makeshift tank that has fish that provide fertilizer for their plants. The boxer said their experiment is very useful amid the COVID-19 crisis.

“Hindi namin akalain na makakatulong sa amin lalo na ngayong naka-lockdown. Doon na kami kumukuha ng pang-ulam,” he said.
