Researchers Estimate Only 6% Of COVID-19 Cases Have Been Detected

TRUE NUMBER OF COVID-19 CASES – According to researchers, the number of COVID-19 cases detected was only at 6%.

For the most part. the detected number of cases highly depends on a country’s capabilities to conduct mass testings. However, not every country has conducted these mass testings.

Moreover, there have been several reports that China had been under reporting the true number of cases in the country. As such, experts believed that the true number of cases worldwide could reach 10 million.

According to an article from International Business times, hard-hit countries were only detecting small percentages of infections. For example, Italy had detected merely 3.5% of infections while the United States detected 1.59%.

By Comparison, South Korea had a detection rate of 49.47%, Germany had 15.58%, and Japan had 25.16%. As per the article, the researchers estimated that worldwide, only 6% of the infections have been detected.

Based on reports by Professor Sebastian Vollmer of Göttingen University:

“Such extreme differences in the amount and quality of testing carried out in different countries mean that official case records are largely uninformative and do not provide helpful information”

According to the authors of the report, delayed and insufficient testings could shed light on why the virus seemed to be deadlier in European countries such and Spain and Italy.

For example, if we look at Germany, on March 31, the country had 71,808 cases with 775 deaths. Meanwhile, Italy had a total of 105,792 cases with 12,428 deaths. This highlights that the virus was deadlier in Italy.

However, this could be attributed to Germany having already detected significantly more of its cases with a detection rate of around 15.58% while Italy had 3.5%.
