Google & Viber Supports Philippines In Efforts Against COVID-19

GOOGLE & VIBER SUPPORTS PHILIPPINES – As the Philippines continued to fight against COVID-19, tech companies such as google and viber provided their support.

Google had recently rolled-out its Community Mobility Report. With this, anonymized and aggregated data of resident’s movements can be analyzed.

As such, reports are now able to identify if Filipinos are staying at home or if they are frequently going to places such as grocery stores, gas stations, or even restaurants.

According to ABS-CBN, Google Philippines head of Government Affairs and Public Policy Yvez Gonzales stated:

Ito ay isang paraan ng Google para magamit ang big data para makatulong sa gobyerno na maintindihan ang galaw ng mga Pilipino

(This is one way for Google to use big data to help governments understand how the residents of the Philippines moves.

Meanwhile, the messaging app Viber forged a partnership with the Department of Health for a public messaging community. Their goal was to fight fake news spread online.

People don’t really know what is the authentic source of information that’s why we partnered with the Department of health which now has an official community where anybody from the Philippines can join

As per the report, the DOH verified viber group now includes over 1.2 million members.

In today’s fight against COVID-19, the need to integrate technology is essential as it provides us with important information. More importantly, this information can be used to effectively implement strategies to curve the spread of the virus.

Meanwhile, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) had sent out subpoenas to 17 social media users suspected of spreading fake news. Moreover, suspects who are proven guilty may face up to 12 years in prison and a fine for 1 million pesos.
