Tiger From Bronx Zoo Tests Positive For COVID-19, First Case Of Its Kind
TIGER TESTS POSITIVE FOR COVID-19 – Nadia, a tiger being cared for at the Bronx Zoo in New York had contracted the new coronavirus, COVID-19.
Nadia became the first of her kind to test positive for COVID-19. Previously, health authorities have confirmed that animals could indeed be infected with the new virus. Dogs and cats alike, have tested positive for it.
Meanwhile, at the Bronx Zoo, the four-year-old female Malayan tiger had developed dry coughs, a symptom of the virus.l Afterward, she tested positive for the virus. However, she is expected to recover.
Five other tigers and lions began manifesting symptoms of respiratory illness. Following this, Samples from Nadia were taken and was tested for COVID-19.
Though they have experienced some decrease in appetite, the cats at the Bronx Zoo are otherwise doing well under veterinary care and are bright, alert, and interactive with their keepers,
Meanwhile, health experts said that the effects of the virus in species other than humans is still a mystery. They emphasized that different species may react differently to novel infections. As such, the animals would continue to be monitored.
According to a report from CNN, the animals were infected by a zoo employee who cared for them. The zookeeper was said to be asymptomatically infected with the virus.
Following this, the United States Department of Agriculture urged people infected with the virus to minimize contact with animals such as pets, until more info is known about the virus.
Currently, the coronavirus pandemic had infected over 1,273,709 people worldwide. Additionally, the virus had caused more than 69,456 fatalities. Meanwhile, over 262,486 patients have recovered from the virus.
