Cordillera Residents Refuse Gov’t Food Aid to Give it to Needy People

Residents in Sadanga in Mountain Province refuse to receive food relief from the national government to give them to less fortunate people.

While other local governments will be contacting the town to hand out food reliefs to people who are greatly affected of the coronavirus and enhanced community quarantine, the town of Sadanga in Mountain Province is refuse to receive food aid from the national government to give it to people need it the most.

In a report of Inquirer, Mayor Gabino Ganggangan says they refuse to receive the food allocation for their town since they can ask assistance to the kadangyan (rich families) in every village. By opening their agamang (rice granaries) it can support and sustain communities while lockdown exist.

Sadanga is a farming town that grows root crops, legumes and rice has a population of almost 12,000 people. The town has been locked down to contain the spread of coronavirus.

Fortunately, there are no confirmed cases reported in their town. Ganggangan said no one has been infected among its residents. However, there are more than 20 persons who are under monitoring while few are under investigation, but they had tested negative and completed their 14-day quarantine.

The mayor added that they are used to live like a Spartan, “We are all used to living spartan lives,” the mayor explains why he had asked the town’s granary owners to prepare their stocks so that residents could live under the worst event, as based on the report.

Ganggangan calls out more affluent members of Sadanga to share their food with the rest of the tribe, particularly neighbors in distress “during hard times or economic crises,” he said on his social media post.

“Let the national government feed those more needy urban poor in the cities and the less fortunate in other areas who can’t sustain themselves,” he said.

“I assure [everyone] no family shall go hungry in our municipality even during these hard times. These are worst-case scenarios and these are how we can prepare for these. I wrote that post to alert my constituents so they can be ready,” he added.
