CITY IN CHINA LEARNS LESSON – Following the outbreak of COVID-19 in China, the city of Shenzhen had banned eating cats and dogs.

Previously, the new coronavirus, COVID-19 was believed to have come from wild animals. Likewise, China has been known for its illegal trade of wildlife which some believed was the cause of the pandemic.

But, in light of the catastrophic effects of the coronavirus outbreak, Shenzen had begun to curve the traditional Chinese stereotype and banned the consumption of cats and dogs.

Currently, COVID-19 had infected more than 935,000 people worldwide. Along with this, the deadly virus had caused more than 47,00 fatalities.

Meanwhile, according to a report from ABS-CBN, authorities in southern China’s technology hub that the ban on the consumption of cats and dogs would be enforced starting May 1.

Dogs and cats as pets have established a much closer relationship with humans than all other animals, and banning the consumption of dogs and cats and other pets is a common practice in developed countries and in Hong Kong and Taiwan

Along with this, China’s top legislature said in late February that they would be banning the trade and consumption of wild animals, a dangerous activity that could transmit viruses to humans.

Across China, cities and governments have been making efforts to enforce the ruling. However, Shenzhen had been more vocal about extending the trade and consumption ban to include cats and dogs.

Dogs have especially been used for consumption in some parts of Asia, especially in China.

Shenzhen is the first city in the world to take the lessons learned from this pandemic seriously and make the changes needed to avoid another pandemic

In lieu of this, Teresa M. Telecky, vice president of the wildlife department for Humane Society International stated:

Shenzhen’s bold steps to stop this trade and wildlife consumption is a model for governments around the world to emulate.
