The Aged Mother is a Japanese folktale written by Japanese poet Matsuo Basho. The story is about the trials the son (recently known as Shinano in some versions) and his mother face from a cruel tyrant who despises the elderly for being frail and weak.

  • The Son | Shinano
    • Shinano is the loving and patient son of the Aged Mother. He loved his mother so much that he chose to hide her in his home after not bearing to abandon her in Obatsuyama or the mountain where “the aged are abandoned” and leaves them to die. He represents the “youth”
  • The Aged Mother
    • The titular character in the story. She is the mother of Shinano. She represents “wisdom”, giving proof that the ruler abolished his policy in the end
  • The Ruler | Daimyo
    • The antagonist of the story. He was the one who ordered to leave the elderly in Obatsuyama to die. He eventually had an epiphany that “with the crown of snow, there cometh wisdom!” after Shinano revealed that his mother was the one who solved his impossible task.
