WHAT IS MABOLO FRUIT? – The Philippines is home to a variety of trees and fruits.
That is why in this article, we will be talking about a not-so-popular fruit in the Philippines – the Mabolo.
The scientific name for the fruit is “Diospyros blancoi“. Sometimes, it is also spelled as “Mabulo”. Meanwhile, in English, it is sometimes called a “velvet apple” or “velvet persimmon” due to its distinct color.
Before eating, the Mabolo should be peeled. After peeling you would see that the mabolo’s flesh is white, firm, almost like an overripe apple. However, the interesting part about this fruit is its taste.
People have compared the mabolo to be a banana-flavored apple. But, its smell has been compared to rotten cheese or cat feces.
In Tagalog, the Mabolo Tree is known as “Kamagong” and Camagon in Spanish.
It is also a seasonal fruit. It happens to be available at around the third quarter of the year (Around August/September).
Additionally, the fruit also has some health benefits as it includes dietary fiber, protein, potassium, iron, calcium, vitamin A, vitamin C, and B-family vitamins.
