Meanwhile, in a report of PhilStar, since the enhanced community quarantine was implemented the crime rate has decreased by 52 percent. According to Lt. Gen. Guillermo Lorenzo Eleazar, Philippine National Police (PNP) deputy chief for operations, 832 index crimes were recorded from March 17 to March 29, which is lower by 52.46 percent compared to 1,750 cases from March 4 to March 16.

Crimes and incidents are categorized according the index crimes that includes murder/homicide, physical injury, sexual harassment, robbery and theft. Eleazar stated that particularly robbery and theft cases went down by 57.59 percent from 896 to 380.

In Luzon, which placed under the community quarantine, crime dropped by 60.23 percent from 958 to 381. Metro Manila’s crime rate dropped from 372 to 154, a decrease of 58.60 percent.

Eleazar said it only shows that the criminals were afraid of contracting COVID-19. He emphasized the importance of regularly providing citizens with food and other basic commodities to prevent robbery.

“Dapat masustain natin itong magandang sitwasyon na ito sa pagtutok sa mga basic needs ng ating mga kababayan,” Eleazar said in Philstar.
