It is a well known English lullaby in which the tune came from a French melody “Ah! vous dirai-je, maman” in 1761. The lyrics, on the other hand, came from a 19th century poem called The Star by Jane Taylor.

The Star was published in Rhymes for the Nursery by the Jane herself, as well as her sister Ann.

The lyrics consists of five stanzas, though the well known was the first stanza. It is performed in the key of C Major.
