REGIONS IN JAPAN – In this topic, we will discuss the following eight regions in Japan that were formed inside the archipelago.
Japan is divided into 47 prefectures that were placed in eight major regions. There is said to be ninth region, which is Okinawa but it oftentimes fall under the Kyūshū region.
Here are the following regions:
- Hokkaido (北海道) | Northern Sea Circuit
- The northernmost region and the only prefecture of the same name in the region. It was known primarily as Ezo, Yezo, Yeso, or Yesso
- Tōhoku (東北地方) | Northeast Region
- The northeastern region of Honshu island. It is composed of six prefectures.
- Kantō (関東地方) | East of the Barrier
- A region in Honsu island which consists of 45% plain, and 55% hills and mountains. It is composed of seven prefectures.
- Chūbu (中部地方) | Central Region
- The central and widest region of Honshu island. It is composed of nine prefectures.
- Kansai (関西地方) | West of the Barrier
- Also known as Kinki region (近畿地方), it is the southern central region of Honshu island. It is composed of seven prefectures.
- Chūgoku (中国地方) | Middle Country
- Also known as San’in-San’yō (山陰山陽地方) it is the westernmost region of Honshu island. It is composed of five prefectures.
- Shikoku (四国) | Four Provinces
- An island region in Japan and the second smallest main island. It is also known as Iyo-no-futana-shima (伊予之二名島), Iyo-shima (伊予島), and Futana-shima (二名島). It is composed of four prefectures.
- Kyūshū (九州) | Nine Provinces
- The third largest island of Japan. It is composed of eight prefectures, including Okinawa, which is said to be the ninth region.
