Duterte’s Quarantine Reminder Isn’t Attacking Particular Mayors – DILG

DILG’s statement on Duterte’s quarantine reminder

President Rodrigo Duterte’s quarantine reminder was not intended to attack particular mayors, Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Eduardo Año said.

Based on a previous report, the Chief Executive of the Philippines reminded the local government units (LGUs) not to make the enhanced quarantine more difficult. “At this time let us make ourselves clear that we are not a separate from a republic or from each other,” Duterte said.

He also reminded that those who are not following policies from the national government would be dealt with proper legal steps. “Criminal cases cannot be far behind,” the President stated.

With this, some netizens interpreted this as an attack against Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto. Here are some tweets.

Amid this issue, Interior Secretary Eduardo Año said that Duterte’s quarantine reminder was not an attack to particular mayors, based on the article from Rappler.

“Everyone is reminded. We’re not pinpointing an individual LGU (local government unit) or person. These are the guidelines of the President intended for all LGUs,” the Interior Secretary said.

Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles also said that this is not a matter of naming particular LGUs. “Magtulungan po tayo. Wala nang ganyanan na, ‘Sinong LGU ‘yan?’ Nagtuturuan na eh. That’s not healthy anymore. Please…this is a general directive of the President so everybody, just follow. Huwag na ‘yung mag-intriga pa na ganito, ganyan. Pare, COVID-19 ang kalaban natin dito. Hindi tayo-tayo ang magkaaway dito, ha?” Nograles added.
