Rhumba – About The Latin Dance In The US East Coast
RHUMBA – In this topic, we are going to know about the Latin dance from the East Coast of the United States called Rhumba.
This Latin dance is a genre of ballroom music and dance that came from, as mentioned above, the East Coast of the United States during the 30s. It is also known as ballroom rumba.
Its music combined the music of American big band and Afro-Cuban rhythms such as son cubano, conga, and rumba.
Its name came from the Cuban music rumba. However, since it completely differs from the Cuban original, authors used the Americanized term rhumba to differentiate the two.
Dance
There are two variations of this dance, both have opposing step patterns and are danced all over the world. The two are international and American:
- International Style
- This style is one of the ballroom dances used in competitions wherein it is the slowest. It is derived from the Cuban rhythm and dance called the bolero-son.
- It is a slower dance of about 120 bpm (beats per minute) which corresponds to what the older generation Cubans called, again, the bolero-son.
- The dance involves a hip-sway over the standing leg; compact steps; and the dance itself doesn’t have a rise and fall.
- American Style
- This is similar to the international version but unlike it, the American version has box-like figures.
