DepEd to Decide on LGUs Recommendation to Shorten School Year Amid COVID-19 Threat

The Department of Education has yet to decide on the recommendations of the local government units to shorten the school year amid the coronavirus.

On Wednesday (March 11, 2020), DepEd Central Visayas director Dr. Salustiano Jimenez said that the department’s National Management Committee will convene to tackle a current issue faced by the education sector.

The Education Department would also discuss the health threat including the coronavirus disease. Jimenez said that the agency will determine the actions they need to take during the meeting.

“All the recommendations from the different LGUs (local government units)of Central Visayas are consolidated and I will report it to the central office during our National ManCom meeting,” Jimenez said.

Jimenez also said that DepEd would release an issuance as soon as the agreement or decisions were made.

On March 9, 2020, the Cebu Provincial Board passed a resolution requesting DepEd officials to cut the school year and shorten the classes amid the coronavirus. The board also wants the Education officials to adopt measures similar to homeschool.

Seventh district Board Member Christopher Baricuatro said that the resolution aims to reduce the student’s exposure to the disease.
