It is a marine mammal which belongs to the Mysticeti, a sub order of the baleen whale. It has a maximum confirmed length of 29.9 meeters or 98 feet. It weighs at about 173 tonnes or 190 tons. This creature has a long and slender body with various shades of grayish-blue.

Its scientific name is Balaenoptera musculus. The scientific name is derived from the two words Balaenoptera, which means winged whale, and musculus, which means “muscle” or “mouse” in diminutive form.

The blue whale has five subspecies:

  • B. m. intermedia – Southern Ocean
  • B. m. brevicauda (pygmy blue whale) – Indian Ocean and South Pacific Ocean
