Manila Council Requires Fast-Food Chains To Hire Senior Citizens, PWDs

Fast-food chains are required by Manila council to hire senior citizens and PWDs

Manila council is now requiring fast-food chains to hire senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PWDs).

It is a common perception among many people that elderly people should just rest in their homes. However, it is also a fact that they can still able to work and earn money for themselves.

Meanwhile, it is also quite common that it is difficult for persons with disabilities to find a job because of their physical condition. Some employers may be judgemental of what their capacities are.

Regarding this problem, the city council of Manila has passed a resolution requiring the fast-food chains to hire senior citizens and PWDs. Based on the report from Inquirer, Ordinance No. 8598 aims to “mandates fast-food chains in the city to provide temporary employment of not more than six months to senior citizens and PWDs as part of the city’s social amelioration program.”

Fast-food firms within the city of Manila are required to hire at least two senior citizens and one person with disability in each branch. They should be given a minimum wage salary and a minimum of four hours of work for at least four days per week, based on the report.

Last year, Manila Mayor Isko Moreno had already expressed his aim regarding this matter. “Give them a chance, an opportunity to earn hanggat kaya pa nila. Marami diyan gusto magtrabaho hindi para kumita pero para makapaglibang, meron ba silang magawa na makadadagdag sa productivity level nila,” he previously said talking to ABS-CBN.

That time he was also drafting the aforementioned ordinance.
