Acording to PhilStar, Annalyn Sevilla, undersecretary of the Department of Education said that they aim to release the fund before the end of school year which is the deadline for teachers to submit the results of their medical exams.

“Allotment for the purpose was just released by the Department of Budget and Management to the Department of Education (DepEd),”

“We are coordinating with the Bureau of Human Resource and Organizational Development on the guidelines for release to teachers,”

The Teachers’ Dignity Coalition (TDC) earlier called on the government to provide free medical examination to teachers which was made mandatory by law.

“It is clear that medical examination for public school teachers should be done annually, it is compulsory. However, the same provision of the law also says that it should be free and, in fact, the law mandates that the government should pay for teachers’ hospitalization and treatment if found necessary,”

Benjo Basas, chair if TDC also said that some teachers already paid for their medical exam due to the late release of the fund that was promised by the department. They also noted that the deadline is at the end of the school year.

As per the report, the TDC said that while it welcomed the medical exam fund, they noted the need for the government to provide free examination since the price varies nationwide ranging from ₱400 to ₱1500.

The 2020 budget did not include the allocation for medical exam of about 822,000 teachers.
