This Chinese folk tale was retold by Lafcadio Hearn, an American journalist. Hearn has a keen interest in the oriental culture which made him write English versions of Chinese and Japanese folktales.

The tale starts with the order from two supreme beings who ordered bellsmiths and molders to make a bell that makes a deep sound.

The story ended that the bellsmiths and molders able to make the great bell at the cost of the life of the daughter of the spearheader of the bell creation.

  • Celestial August
    • The Son of Heaven. He was the one who ordered the creation of the Great Bell. He is technically the antagonist of the story.
  • Kouan-Yu
    • The worthy official who spearheaded the creation of the great bell. He has a beautiful daughter. He is the side character of the tale.
  • Ko-Ngal
    • The beautiful daughter of Kouan-Yu. She sacrificed her life to save her father. She is the main protagonist of the story.
  • Ko-Ngai’s Lady in Waiting
    • A supporting character. She was trhe one who tried to stop Ko-Ngal from jumping in the cauldron.
