According to the report of The Chronicle, doctors in China have announced that a 17-day-old baby who tested positive for the coronavirus at birth earlier this month has been cured and recovered from the virus.

The baby was born on February 5 at Hubei Provincial People’s Hospital in Wuhan, China – which is the epicenter of the COVID-19 and reported where the virus came from.

The baby’s mother had already contracted the virus, now called COVID-19, just prior to birth and was suffering a severe chest infection. Four days later after birth, the baby has been also reported contracted the deadly virus.

“Zeng Lingkong, director of neonatal medicine at Wuhan Children’s Hospital, said Xiaoxiao’s infection index was not high, so no antibiotics were used,” People’s Daily reported. Baby Xiaoxiao received around-the-clock care in isolation and developed no acute symptoms as a result of the disease.

“Her heart was a bit weak, but we treated that. Because the novel coronavirus is new, it is not entirely clear how newborns are affected. We must also be very careful when administering antiviral drugs to newborns,” Doctor Zeng Lingkong said.

“As her condition did not appear to significantly worsen, we did not prescribe any particular antiviral medicines. Her treatment was very successful. She had no breathing difficulties, fevers or coughing,” he added.

“She remained stable throughout the 16 days of treatment and has now twice tested negative for the Covid-19. She meets the standards for discharge,” he continued.

The child is China’s youngest recovered patient; she was reunited with her family on February 21. While her mum remains in quarantine.
