Robot Surgeons To Begin Work & Perform Surgeries In NHS
ROBOT SURGEONS TO BEGIN WORK – The Future is here! As scary as it may sound, but we’re getting closer to autonomy we could have only imagined in movies.
According to an article by Telegraph UK, a “next-generation” British made robot is set to perform surgeries for the NHS, a first for Europe.
The robot was dubbed “Versius”, and was hailed as a massive “leap forward” in the fields of both medicine and robotics. Based on reports, the robot was designed to make surgery less painful for patients.
The robot was built by Cambridge-based start-up CMR Surgical. Along with this, it would also allow surgeons to perform for longer periods due to reduced fatigue at it could be operated while sitting down.
The news follows reports that three-quarters of surgeons have suffered back pain due to carrying out procedures by contorting themselves into bad positions for hours at a time while performing surgery.
As per the report, one in five surgeons from a poll of more than 450 warned that they could be forced to retire early if the habit would continue.
Versius was designed to perform keyhole surgery. This was also known as minimally invasive surgery or laparoscopy, a complicated procedure involving surgeons operating on patients through small incisions made on the body.
The robot has three arms that move in a similar manner to humans arms. They are controlled by surgeons using a remote control device connected to a screen in the operating theatre.
The screen gives doctors a precise view of their movements by displaying the part of the body they are operating on.
