ABS-CBN May Operate Until 2022 Even Franchise Expires Next Month, Senator Sotto Says

Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III said that ABS-CBN may continue to operate until 2022 even if the franchise expires next month.

Senator Sotto said that Kapamilya network’s franchise is deemed extended until March 2022 as long as there is a pending bill renewing its franchise. The giant network could still operate after its franchise expires in March 2020.

The lawmaker explained that ABS-CBN would only stop their operation after the House of Representatives rejects the bill seeking the renewal of their franchise for another 25 years of operation.

“They can still operate. If it’s not approved March of 2022, that’s the only time that it’s terminated, As long as may naka file na (there is a filed) bill, it is deemed extended, naka-file (it’s filed) eh. It has happened so many times with other franchises,” Sotto said.

Sotto said that Congress should reject the franchise renewal if they refuse to grant it to ABS-CBN.

Earlier this week, Solicitor General Jose Calida filed a quo warranto petition to the Supreme Court asking for the revocation of the giant network’s franchise over its alleged violation.
