In a statement, DTI Secretary Ramon Lopez said Medtecs International Corp., Ltd. promised to supply 100,000 surgical masks this week and the next 400,000 pieces per week as it raises their production capacity to meet growing local demand.

Thus, the Bataan-based company is expected to produce up to 80,000 pieces of surgical masks daily.

“Medtecs, which has been operating in the country for the last 41 years, expressed their continuous commitment to support and prioritize the requirements of the Philippines,” said Sec. Lopez.

Surgical masks have been running out of stores since the Taal Volcano erupted due to the thick ash emitted. Before the end of the Taal crisis, there was a spread of novel coronavirus (nCoV) originating in China that worsened the scarcity of face masks.

According to the DTI report, big drugstores like Mercury Drug and Southstar Drugs have been out of stock since last week. The DTI has commissioned an agency under it – the Philippine International Trading Corporation – to collect five million face masks from abroad to supplement local supply and most importantly to have the Department of Health and other health workers use it.
