STARBUCKS CLOSES IN CHINA – The new coronavirus outbreak that started in Wuhan continued to plague China with more than 4,600 people infected and 106 killed.

This led the most popular coffee chain in the world, Starbucks, to close more than half of its branches in Mainland China.

Chief Executive officer of Starbucks, Kevin Johnson stated:

We will be transparent with all stakeholders in communicating how we are responding to these extraordinary circumstances and the implications for our near-term business results,

However, he assured that the company is committed to China. Johnson said Starbucks planned to raise its financial projections for the year. But, they changed course to prevent the spread of the virus.

Other chains in China have also been closed such as McDonald’s and Yun China Holdings who operate Pizza Hut and KFC in China. But, Starbucks appeared to carry out a broader suspension of activities than ints counterparts.

According to an article from StraitsTimes, China and the US are their most important markets as they seek to recapture their rapid growth. This strategy worked as the two countries yielded high customer traffic.

But, as the virus continued to spread, several experts have said that the containment of the virus would be difficult. One even claimed that it could potentially be deadlier than the Spanish Influenza.

I really hate to be the epidemiologist who has to admit this, but we are potentially faced with possibly an unchecked pandemic that the world has not seen since the 1918 Spanish Influenza.
