The Wuhan virus had already infected more than 4600 people and killed 106 in just a few days. Because of the outbreak, Hong Kong had closed its borders to most of Mainland China.

Meanwhile, doctors at the Shanghai Emerging and Re-emerging Infectious Disease Institute claimed that they have created a spray that can effectively protect against the Wuhan coronavirus.

According to an article from Shanghai.Ist, the spray was already six years in the making. In addition, it had already completed the pre-clinical phase which included animal testing. This meant that it was now ready to test on human participants.

Dr. Xu Jianqing, the head of the institute stated that his team had previously developed a universal influenza vaccine in which they are in the process of patenting.

What is the spray made of?

As per the article, Dr. Xu said the spray was composed of two active ingredients that inhibit viral replication and inflammation. In addition, it also aids with mucosal repair.

How do you use the spray?

The use of the spray is easy. You just need to tilt your head upwards and spray it four times (0.5 to 1 milliliter) into the throat and inhale deeply.

This process should be done twice daily, once in the morning and once in the evening.

Is this available now?

A small batch had already been sent to the emergency ward of the Shanghai Public Health Clinical Center to be used by doctors in the frontline in the fight against the virus outbreak.

However, Dr. Xu said that it typically takes four to five years between clinical testing and approval. But, Dr. Xu hoped that authorities could make a special exception so the spray could be used amidst the virus outbreak.
