Cayetano Says There’s Enough Time To Tackle ABS-CBN Franchise Bill

ABS-CBN – House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano said there is enough time to tackle the franchise issue of the ABS-CBN network.

Philippine President Rodrigo Roa Duterte complained that the ABS-CBN network did not air his campaign advertisement in 2016 and bias reporting among others. He previously told the executives of the network to sell the company.

The 74-year-old chief executive warned not to allow the tv network to renew its franchise. Several celebrities have appealed to the president to reconsider his stand on the franchise issue. Among them are Sharon Cuneta, Lea Salonga, and Liza Soberano among others.

Based on a report from ABS-CBN News, House speaker Alan Peter Cayetano said there is enough time for the House of Representatives to tackle ABS-CBN franchise renewal. He said that during the House plenary session in Batangas City on Wednesday, January 22.

The politician revealed that he had a discussion with Rep. Franz Alvarez, the chairman of the House Committee on Legislative Franchises about the matter.

“I talked to [Franchises committee] Chairman Chicoy [Alvarez] and he’s recommending we start…there are about 40 to 50 franchise bills so first week of February daw, he will start and kung sino daw ang mga kumpleto ang (those with complete) requirements, he will start the hearings,” he said.

According to the report, Alan Peter Cayetano said the hearing about the ABS-CBN franchise bill might begin the “week after next week.” He assured that the House will be fair in considering the network’s application.

“I’ll just reiterate that we have committed to the Filipino people that we will have fair hearings, that we will hear the issues and also hear the replies, and we cannot promise you any decision until we finish the hearings, to be fair with everyone,” he said.

Kapamilya network’s franchise is set to expire in March 2020.
