DOH: Diaper, Bra, and Panty Can be Used as Alternatives to Face Mask

DOH Says Diaper, Bra, and Panty Can be Used as Alternative to Face Mask

Department of Health (DOH) said that diaper and other undergarments such as bra and panty can be used as an alternative face mask.

Since Taal Volcano Eruption emitted heavy ashfall, health officials recommend every resident in the near area to wear N95 mask to avoid health problems due to dangerous ash. Recent reports said medical supply stores ran out of face masks.

However, some uncharitable stores are taking advantage of the shortage of face masks. Instead of selling it on the suggested retail price some stores sold it much higher than the regular price.

According to the report of GMA News, in the absence of N95 face masks, affected individuals and responders can use undergarments like a brassiere, panty, and even diapers to protect themselves from volcanic ash, Health Assistant Secretary Ma. Francia Laxamana said in a report.

“Meron pang ibang creative ways of doing things. Isa po yung kamiseta, ilagay ninyo po. Meron pong isang creative, yung bra at panty,” Laxamana said. “Ang diapers open so puwede po siya. Actually kung titingnan niyo ang mga diapers merong dry. Puwede niyong basain ng konti para hindi kayo ma-suffocate.”

The health official said that Filipinos affected by the Volcanic eruption can do these simple measures while the supply of N95 masks is running out. Laxamana described these Department of Health-approved alternatives as “very good, creative, and practical.”

A regular, surgical mask can also be an alternative to the N95 face mask as long as a damp cloth is placed inside, she said. The department has since advised the public to minimize exposure to ash, stay indoors as much as possible.
