On Sunday, Taal Volcano erupted, leading to volcanic ashfall in provinces and cities of Batangas. In addition, several earthquakes have been recorded after the eruption.

With the continuous ashfall that was experienced, many residents began to hoard face masks. Some businesses even took the opportunity to overprice the face masks being sold.

However, according to Dr. Gerry Bagtasa of the University of the Philippines Institute of Environmental Science and Meteorology, Metro Manila’s air quality during the New Year was much worse.

Bagtasa explained that the weather, prevented volcanic ash to move closer towards Metro Manila. Based on an article from Inquirer, the radar from the PAGASA revealed that ash was spewed 30 km up from Taal’s crater.

But, the winds blew the ash at 12.5 km high. Bagtasa stated that most of the ash plume directed towards Metro Manila descended only up to 3 km.

In addition to this, the finer ash was not able to reach the ground surface. He added that the thick ashfall in some areas was relatively huge and was pulled down by gravity.

Although, he stated that because of Metro Manila’s daily pollution, especially those coming from vehicles, a mask to cover the nose and mouth could be helpful.

Based on an article from Inquirer, Bagtasa said that if Taal would violently erupt on Tuesday and Wednesday, ash plume would be sent towards the east and could affect the Calabarzon and Bicol regions.
