Every 15th of May, the residents of Lucban, Quezon fill their homes with fruit, vegetables and colorful kiping in celebration of Pahiyas.

According to an article from Culture Trip, the word “Pahiyas” was derived from the word “payas” that meant decoration or to decorate.

As per the article, the reason we celebrate the Pahiyas festival could be traced back to the 15th century. At this time, farmers offer their harvest at the foot of Mount Banahaw.

Ast time went by, they brought their produce at the church to honor the town’s patron saint – St. Isidore the Laborer, the patron saint of farmers, laborers, and peasants.

However, as time progressed, the church could no longer accommodate all of the bountiful harvest. Following this, they agreed that the harvest would instead be displayed in their homes instead.

Thus, the parish priest would now go to the community and bless their harvest at their homes.

Nowadays, the highlight of the festival comes following the town’s procession where the spirited tradition of “Kalas” begins. The term means to enthusiastically display the harvest and decorations from the house to symbolize joy and merriment.
