Recently, the Department of Health (DOH) had been on high alert amidst reports of a mystery disease from China. The mystery illness was first recorded on December 24 in Wuhan, one of China’s central cities.

However, Terence Anthony Bermejo, chief of the Bureau of Quarantine (BOQ) in Cebu stated that the public doesn’t need to wear masks.

But, according to a report from Sunstar, the Quarantine official said that persons who are immunocompromised or have diabetes, HIV, undergoing chemotherapy, and malnourished are advised to wear masks.

Meanwhile, the Bureau is strictly monitoring passengers coming from China at Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA) in Lapu-Lapu City.

There, a passive thermal imaging machine that could read passenger’s body temperatures is installed. He added that if a person is detected with high body temperature, a set of protocols would be followed.

In South Korea, the Associated Press reported a case of isolated treatment. A 36-year-old Chinese woman was diagnosed with pneumonia on Tuesday, Jan.7.

This was the following two business trips to China in the last month. However, none of the Chinese patients with severe viral pneumonia had died and are now undergoing treatment.

From 2002 to 2003, there was a SARS outbreak in China and Hong Kong. This led to the deaths of hundreds of people.

According to an article from Inquirer, authorities have reported that the hotspot for the recent infections centered around a wet market in Wuhan. Here, wild animals were sold.

However, they are still identifying the cause of the disease. Although, they have concluded that common respiratory diseases such as influenza, bird flu, and adenovirus infection were not the culprit.
