According to SunStar, the local government is still confirming whether the fire-stricken area of the said place is privately owned.

Jeffrey Ibones, officer-in-charge (OIC) of the Department of Social Welfare Services (DSWS) said that the government will negotiate with the owners so that no individual will be displaced.

Partial records from the DSWS show that as of January 5 afternoon, 50 families or 192 individuals were affected by the fire, which also destroyed at about 40 houses.

The government will provide at about ₱20,000 worth of financial assistance to home owners, and ₱10,000 to renters.

The DSWS, meanwhile, will provide free meals on the first three days after the fire and distribute rice and canned goods afterwards. they will also provide housing materials, although it may take time.

Survivors who are placed at the barangay gym were given tarpaulin covers while others from prior fires have year to receive their assistance.

Based on the report, T. Padilla Barangay Captain Michael Ralota said that the survivors can return and rebuild their homes, adding that the affected area is private.

Ralota further said that it would have been of great help if the planned rehabilitation of the barangay water system was enacted or the water pipe tank at the bank of the public market been functioning.

“The planned rehabilitation has been on the drawing board for so long. Several administrations have come and gone. The government has spent millions of pesos on that but it still doesn’t function. I could implement the water system myself since I am a master plumber,”

Ralota then said that survivors can temporarily stay in the barangay gym while they rebuild. Ralota has yet to discuss the matter with the barangay council, adding that they might declare a state of calamity.
