Firecracker Injuries Hit 54 Individuals, Says Health Department
FIRECRACKER INJURIES – The Department of Health (DOH) recently reported that the number of firecracker injuries rose at 54.
DOH further elaborated that eight more individuals, including a 13-year old boy from Aliasa, Nueva Ecija, were injured by cracker blasts, with the latter losing two fingers last Sunday.
According to PhilStar, DOH Epidemiology Bureau’s surveillance report shows that the victim had “traumatic amputation” of his fifth digit and ring finger due to an illegal firecracker called “cylinder”.
The eight cases adds up to a sum of 54 from December 21 up to December 30 6 AM. The number is higher by four cases or 8 percent higher than last year’s 50 recorded cases.
National Capital Region and Central Visayas had the most cases with 21. This was followed up by Ilocos Region and and Central Visayas with six cases each.
The regions of Cagayan Valley, Calabarzon and Bicol had four cases, while Western Visayas and Soccsksargen had three cases.
As per the report, DOH reported that more than half (23 out of 54) cases were active users of firecrackers, while the rest of these cases happened on the street. Most of the cases have wounds on the eyes and hands.
Illegal firecrackers like piccolo and boga remains the most common causes of eight and six.
