Mayor Vener Muñoz of Laguna said a state of emergency has been declared in order for the town to get access to much needed financial assistance. According to an article from ABS-CBN, there have been eleven people confirmed dead and 200 hospitalized on Sunday.

This was after the individuals drank palm liquor, or, more known locally as “lambanog”. The mayor explained that he paid for the expenses in the hospital.

Pansamantala ako nagastos eh sa dami niyan hindi naman ako mayaman“, said the Mayor. As per the article, the victims were from different parties, however, they all bought the liquor from the same store.

After the deadly incident, the mayor said that the sale of lambanog has been suspended by the local government. Following this, a critical patient has been put in the intensive care unit of the Philippine General Hospital and would undergo dialysis.

According to the hospital’s spokesman Dr. Jonas del Rosario, there were 43 patients that experienced symptoms after drinking lambanog. Meanwhile, 17 others who drank the same drink are being monitored. The youngest of whom was 13 and the eldest was 75.

The spokesman added that hundreds more were transferred to East Avenue Medical Center, Rizal Medical Center, or was transferred to provincial hospitals. With the development, an FDA official said the alcoholic drink should only contain less than 1% of methanol alcohol.

As per the article, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officer-in-charge Eric Domingo, if the production of the alcoholic drink is wrong, instead of ethanol, methanol would be produced.

In lieu of this, the FDA is now investigating the brand of Liquor which FDA officer-in-charge Eric Domingo said was not registered with the agency.

Because of the recent events, del Rosario urged residents to head straight for the hospital if ever they experience vomiting, stomach pain, and dimming eyesight.
