According to an article from Manila Bulletin, the BFAR Region 8 Director Juan Albaladejo stated that the water samples in the areas tested positive for Pyrodinium bahamense variety compressum.

This is a toxic microorganism that is responsible for paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) or what’s commonly known as “red tide”. The examination was done in the Provincial Marine Biotoxin Laboratory.

We are issuing this warning as a precautionary advice to the public. Fish, squid, crab, and shrimp can be eaten but all entrails must be removed, and washed thoroughly before cooking

In addition to this, the BFAR director shared that other coastal areas in Region 8 are free from the red-tide. These places include the Maqueda Bay, Cambatutay Bay, Villareal Bays, and Daram Isalnd in Western Samar.

The Carigara bay, coastal waters of Calubian, Leyte, and coastal waters of Biliran province are also free from the red tide.

With this, BFAR stated that not only do they continuously monitor the bays to protect residents, but also to protect the fishery industry in the local areas.
