U2 Pays Honors Women Like Maria Ressa, Cory Aquino During PH Concert

U2 – Irish rock band U2 dedicated their song “Ultraviolet” to some notable women in the Philippines like Pia Cayetano, Maria Ressa, and Cory Aquino.

Irish rock band U2 is in the Philippines to play their “Joshua Tree Tour” at the Philippine Arena. The four members of the band are vocalist Bono, the Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr. they are known for the hit songs “With or Without You,” “Bad,” and “Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses.”

In a previous article, the frontman praised the Red Cross volunteers, activists, and journalists. He asked the concertgoers to pray for them.

“Also in our prayers, let’s keep the journalists, the activists who keep this country safe. We salute you, truth-tellers. Everyday heroes, women and men,” Bono said.

Based on a report from CNN News, the famous rockband also honors late president Corazon Aquino, Rappler CEO Maria Ressa, Senator Pia Cayetano and other Pinay women in the country during their concert on Wednesday.

The band dedicated their performance of “Ultraviolet” to all the women in the world. A video was played in the background during their performance. It showed the faces of notable female personalities from the Philippines and other countries.

According to the report, among the Pinay shown were climate and social justice activist Lidy Nacpil, revolutionary heroine Melchora Aquino, and Miss Saigon Lea Salonga along with Ressa and Aquino. Senator Pia S. Cayetano’s photo was also shown but her last name was misspelled as “Cayentano.”

Bono also made special mention of journalist Maria Ressa more than once. “Maria Ressa is an incredible woman but the extraordinary thing is even Maria Ressa will say it’s not about individuals, it’s about collective action,” he said.

This was the first time the 1970’s band visited and performed in the country after 40 years in the music industry.
