These are the facts you need to know about holiday blues

Holiday blues, defined as a phenomenon when a person feels lonely during the holiday season or the winter, is affecting a lot of people.

According to psychiatrist Dr. Ronald Elepaño, this cannot be considered yet as a valid diagnosis but it falls in the category of depression. This condition is also called seasonal depression because it just occurs during a certain season.

The psychiatrist also pointed out some factors that can cause a feeling of loneliness during these times.

Longer nights

Holiday blues, in previous years, are more common in countries with winter. However, no that countries are more industrialized now, more people are getting lesser sun exposure. Lack of sunlight can affect the mood of a person, according to Dr. Elepaño.

Highly stressful time

Aside from left and right Christmas parties, the traffic also affects the mood of a person, the psychiatrist explained.

Heartbreak and separation

Dr. Elepaño said that more people who experience holiday depression are those who got separated from their loved once for whatever reason, not just those who broke up with their partners.

Healthcare providers

People who are taking care of those who are sick, not just doctors may also feel loneliness during the holidays. “Those who feel na hindi sila makalabas dahil may inaalagaan silang may sakit,” the psychiatrist said.

People recovering from illness/addiction

It is in the nature of people to drink and have fun during this season but according to the doctor, people who are recovering from addiction may get lonely because they could not drink alcohol anymore.

People in the business industry

“The business must come first”, this might also affect the mood of a person who needs to focus on the business and set aside the time to enjoy.

Dr. Elepaño added that if this feeling already interferes in your day to day routine, you may need to consult the doctor already. He also said that helping one another to cope up can help a lot.

The psychiatrist also pointed out the importance of social media at this time which can be used to communicate with your loved once and spread good vibes to everyone, Dr. Elepaño said in an ABS-CBN interview.
