What Is Nepal? About This Country In Southern Asia

Known officially as the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, it is a landlocked country in the southern region of Asia.

Its official language is Nepali and is known locally as Saṅghīya Lokatāntrik Gaṇatantra Nepāl ( सङ्घीय लोकतान्त्रिक गणतन्त्र नेपाल ).

It is located in the mountain range of Himalayas with a landmass of about 147K kilometers squared or 56.8K square miles.

Its capital city is Kathmandu and has a population of about 28 million people, as of 2018 making it the 48th most populous country.

Its government is a federal parliamentary republic currently governed by president Bidhya Devi Bhandari.

Etymology

The origins of the name is uncertain. In Hindu mythology, the name is derived from a Hindu sage called Ne who is reffered to as Ne Muni or Nemi. In Buddhist mythology, Manjushri Bodhisattva drained a lake of serpents to create the valley and placed Adi-Buddha Ne to take care of the settlers of the valley.

In Gopalarajvamshavali or the genealogy of ancient Gopala dynasty, it is named after the cowherd and founder of the Nepali scion of Abhiras named Nepa.
