Jerry Olsim Bags PH 1st Kickboxing Gold in SEA Games 2019

SEA GAMES 2019 – Filipino athlete Jerry Olsim bagged the Philippines’ first kickboxing gold in the SEA Games 2019.

The Philippines hosted the 30th Southeast Asian Games. All of the Filipino athletes were inspired to show off their skills in their own country.

Filipino athletes have won over 136 gold medals in the regional meet and there are only 51 gold medals up for grabs.

Among the early winners include wushu star Agatha Wong, gymnast Carlos Yulo and weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz. In a previous article, PH’s Mobile Legends team also made history as they bagged the first-ever esports gold medal at the biennial meet.

Filipino athletes have achieved historic milestones in the SEA Games 2019 and surpassed their previous best of 112 gold medals in 2005. The Philippines is ahead of Indonesia, Vietnam, and Thailand.

Based on a report from Spin.Ph, mixed martial arts specialist Jerry Olsim won the Philippines’ first gold in kickboxing. It was held at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City. Kickboxing is played for the first time in the SEA Games.  He defeated Thai kickboxer Klinming Sarayut in -69kg light kickboxing event men’s division.

“Hindi ko malaman kung anong nararamdaman ngayon, pero sobrang saya ko talaga. Alam ko magagaling ang Thailand sa striking, sobrang saya ko na natalo natin ang Thai sa striking…”

“Sa tingin ko naging advantage natin ay yung boxing natin dahil magagaling yung mga Filipino sa boxing,” he added.

According to the report, Jerry Olsim’s compatriots Jomar Balangui and Renalyn Dacquel settled for silver. Philippine team has 2 shots at the gold medal in kickboxing. Jean Claude Saclag and Gina Iniong might add gold medals for the country.
