Allegories are figures of speech wherein abstract ideas and principles are described in therm of characters, figures, and events. It can be used in poetry to voice out a story with the purpose of teaching or explaining said ideas or principles.
Sometimes, this literary device can be confused with symbolism. This is because allegories use symbols, however, it pertains to a complete narrative where characters and events are used to explain abstract ideas or events.
On the other hand, a symbol is used to signify or explain another object. It does not tell a story like how the allegory does.

Animal Farm, written by George Orwell, is an allegory that uses farm animals to describe the overthrow of the last Russian Tsar, Nicholas II, and the Communist Revolution of Russia before WW I.
The events that transpired with the animals on the farm are used to shed light on the corruption and greed of the revolution. It also shows how powerful people can change the ideology of society.
Writers often use allegories to add unique layers of meanings to their works. It adds multi-dimensional depth to characters so they stand for something bigger than what they are perceived to be.
