Known officially as the Lebanese Republic, it is a country of Western Region of Asia.

Its official language is Arabic and its local language is Lebanese Arabic or Lebanese. In Arabic it’s called Al-Jumhūrīyah al-Lubnānīyah (الجمهورية اللبنانية)

It is surrounded by the following areas:

  • Syria
  • Israel
  • Cyprus
  • Mediteranean Sea

It’s capital city is Beirut and has a population of about 6.8 million people, as of 2018, making it the 112th most populous country in the world.

It has a landmass of about 10.4K square kilometers or 4K square miles.

Its government is a unitary confessionalist parliamentary republic governed by president Michel Aoun.

Etymology

It got its name from the Phoenican root “lbn(𐤋𐤁𐤍), which means “white”. This is due to the snow-capped peaks of Mount Lebanon. The name have been discovered in various Middle Bronze Age texts in the library of Ebla, and the three out of twelve tablets of the Epic of Gilgamesh.

As an administrative name, it was introduced as he Mount Lebanon Mutasarrifate (متصرفية جبل لبنان‎); or Cebel-i Lübnan Mutasarrıflığı in Turkish.
