Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo made the statement after the results of the third-quarter survey. It revealed that the Filipinos trust rating of China is at -33.

However, the Spokesperson said that they were not surprised by the results of the survey. He even added that it was foreseeable and understandable.

Panelo explained that that could’ve been because of the maritime disputes between the Philippines and China regarding the West Philippine Sea. Although, the palace does not want to force citizens to change their views of China.

Based on a report from GMA, Panelo stated that they would respect the citizen’s convictions the way they value their allegiance to the Republic and its elements.

It is in our belief, however, that China, like any other country, will be eventually appreciated by the Filipinos by reason of the President’s independent foreign policy which has resulted in significant benefits favorable to the Philippines.

Afterward, he added that China could become a role model of the Philippines in reducing or eradicating poverty. Back in 2017, China’s poverty rate was 3.1 percent.

Based on the survey conducted by the Social Weather Stations (SWS) China had a positive trust rating in only nine out of 51 surveys since the first survey in August 1994.

Adding to this, the highest trust rating China ever got was +17 back in June 2010. Meanwhile, its lowest rating was in September of 2015 with -46.
