A DAY IN THE COUNTRY – In this topic, we will now know the summary of the story “A Day in the Country” by the Russian writer Chekhov.

A DAY IN THE COUNTRY

As mentioned above, according to netizen Chirpy on Brainly, it is written by Russian writer Anton Pavlovich Chekhov. It tells the story of Terenty, a homeless cobbler, who is an unsung hero.

Here is the summary of the story:

In a village, a 6 year old little girl named Fyokla came running through. The village were preparing for a storm. Fyokla was asking every “uncle” (how she calls the people in the village).

Fyokla was able to receive help from a man named Terenty, who is a “tall old man with a thin, pock-marked face, very long legs, and bare feet, dressed in a woman’s tattered jacket”. He does not look hero type.

Fyokla asked to help free her brother Danilka, whose arm got stuck in a tree. Terenty agreed, disregarding the storm to help Fyokla’s brother and ensuring Fyokla in a fatherly manner that he will free him.

Eventually he freed Danilka, the children eventually loved the old man. Terenty may not look like it but he answers all questions, and there is no secret in nature which baffles him. He knows everything. All the villagers know as much as he does but the children love him because he is willing to share his knowledge and time with the two orphan children.

All three retire to a deserted barn after the children spend a day with the old man. Terenty shows sincerity and love for the two orphan children. Terenty comes back later and puts bread under their heads and prayed for them while they are asleep. In this way Terenty tries to make the lives of Fyokla and Danilka a little better than his own.
