The Senator said that there are currently 50 Malasakit Centers nationwide that are serving over 160,000 patients. Under the bill, hospitals managed by LGUs and other public hospitals may also establish Malasakit Centers.

This could be done if they meet a certain requirement and criteria. Adding to this, they need to guarantee the availability of funds for operation fees which include maintenance and staff training.

Adding to this, the bill also endorsed Sen. Franklin Drilon’s amendment. This ensured that the bill would not limit the “access to or availability of medical and financial assistance only to indigent and financially incapacitated patients referred through Malasakit Centers“.

With this, Senate President Ralph Recto wanted to make sure that patients in other government hospitals without Malasakit Centers could still get medical assistance from DOH.
