According to the Dallas Learning Cloud, a government is described as the institution or institutions that has the basic power to rule a society. Theoretically and practically, it also has a monopoly in managing violence.
Here are some of the following basic forms of government:
- Democracy
- The basic and most prevalent form. Here, all eligible citizens have an equal say in the decisions that will affect their lives. This also allows them to participate equally directly or via elected representatives
- Monarchy
- Means the rule of one. This is ruled by a king or an emperor. In the modern times, however, this is akin to dictatorship
- Oligarchy
- Means the rule of the few. This is ruled by a group of aristocrats or men of noble blood.
- Theocracy
- This is ruled by a religious leader or a group of religious officials who are interpreting their god’s will.
- Authoritarianism
- This form is the monopoly of political power by an individual or a small group that allows people to go on their private lives
- Totalitarianism
- This is ruled by an elite which shows unlimited power over individuals in all aspects of life.
